To the Deery Family,

We were heartbroken to hear the news about Matt this past week and wanted you to know that words can't express how deeply sorry we are. We have been part of the Vertical Assault family for the past 4 years and our son Connor and Matt developed a nice relationship. We loved Matt's competitiveness and his fun loving nature and remember fondly of seeing Connor and Matt interact at the Skyland and State Meets, and at the many Vertical sessions we attended. They always seemed to be smiling and sharing something funny. We remember the "inside" bets they had with each other and are reminded of their friendship each time Connor puts on Matt's neon yellow "Phillipsburg Track" T-shirt (a result of one of those "bets") or one of his other favorites that Matt gave him -the brown "UP" T-Shirt with the character Russell on the front that he traded for a Ville Track & Field shirt. We are thankful for the friendship they shared and Matt's kindness toward Connor.

God Bless all of you- The Grunwalds

To the entire Deery family,

We are so sorry to hear of Matt's tragic passing. We are the parents of Derek Brown who played football with Eric at ESU and who passed away on July 5 as a result of an auto accident on June 30. We know what you are going through and will keep all of you in our prayers.

A man’s life is best measured, not in years, but in friends. By that measure, Matt had a full life, one that influenced many people to be as positive and warm as he was. Although they were competitors, Matt mentored and encouraged my grandson at track meets. Watching Matt develop into one of the best pole vaulters in the state was a pleasure; learning from those close to him that he had developed into one of the best young men was more important. My sincerest condolences.

Dawn,

There is no pain more far-reaching and deeper than losing a child. My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family at this most difficult time.

When you are sorrowful look in your heart, and you'll see that you are weeping for that which has been your delight.

What a tremendous young man! In just one brief year he made our campus a better place, spreading cheer with his contagious smile and engaging personality. I can't imagine your heartache, but I pray your load is lightened just a little in knowing we are thinking of you and praying for your strength and comfort.

We just wanted your family to know how fortunate we consider ourselves to know Matt. He is an amazing young man, and a great friend to our son, Kenny. We enjoyed watching and talking to him at the meets...he ALWAYS made us laugh!

One of my favorite moments with Matt was when he and Kenny came by my mom's house for a visit. It was the first time he met my mother. She is 89 and not in the best health, and Matt came in and acted as though he'd known her for years! She loved it! Before he left, he came up to her and hugged her and told her to keep smiling! You have a wonderful son, and our thoughts and prayers will be with you. Thank you for sharing him with us. Thoughtfully, Beth and Jerry Smith

My condolences to the Deery family as you grieve the loss of your son, Matt. Abba, Father, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, eternal source of all comfort and compassion, thank You for the soul of Matthew Deery and the love that You shone through his soul during his 19 years earthly sojourn. I ask You to draw the souls of his family members and the souls of his community members to Yourself opening their soul's eyes to Your Love and Comfort at this time through the loving ministry of Your Son Jesus Christ and anoint their hearts with the oil of salvation and peace through the assuring ministry of Your Holy Spirit as they adjust to Matt's absence during the rest of their earthly sojourns.

Humbly Your Servant, Milton
